Foliar nutrition is a method used to remedy nutritional deficiencies rapidly and effectively. In addition, it allows to enhance growth in certain plant physiological status and induce specific characteristics into the crop. For example, its application in the last phases of the annual plant cycles significantly improves harvest quantity and quality.
Foliar fertilization becomes a key practice when there are adverse environmental conditions that prevent the correct absorption of nutrients by the root system. Extreme pH soils (acid or basic) are clear examples of these situations, in addition to the soils with very low water content (drought) or very high water content (waterlogged), the existence of high content in cations or root diseases, among others.
One of the advantages of foliar fertilization is that the plant quickly responds to the treatment and it allows to correct nutritional deficiencies immediately. Thus, in many crops that have chronic nutritional deficiencies at fixed times of the crop cycle, foliar fertilization is even a preventive practice. A similar situation occurs when plant growth needs to be enhanced, such as in early development phases or in flower and fruit development phases.
However, foliar fertilization involves certain risks if low quality products are used, as toxicity or lack of efficiency problems may appear. Thus, it is recommended to use products with a balanced pH and with mineral sources that facilitate their penetration into the leaf. Other essential aspects are a correct application of the product, time of treatment, doses or repetitions.
